Raw honey: The healing treasure

Raw honey: The healing treasure

  • Raw honey is one of nature’s most valuable treasure.
  • As its name states, raw honey is not pasteurized, not filtered, unaltered, unprocessed, and harvested directly from the honeycomb to your pantry, courtesy of nature’s little honeybees.
  • Besides being delicious, long lasting, and a healthier alternative to sugar or artificial sweeteners, raw honey has a lot of potent medicinal properties.
  • Let’s take a look at  the health benefits of raw honey.
  • Antioxidant rich:
  • Raw honey is rich in antioxidants, which are key to good health. Antioxidants kill disease causing free radicals that have been linked to cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancers.
  • Cough reliever:
  • A 2007 study showed that honey may help relieve coughs and trouble sleeping.  A single dose of buckwheat honey was just as effective as a single dose of dextromethorphan in relieving nocturnal cough.
  • Diabetes help:
  • Even though honey contains simple sugars, it is NOT the same as white sugar or artificial sweeteners. The combination of fructose and glucose helps the body  stabilize blood sugar levels.
A 2004 study shows that raw honey may help reduce LDL cholesterol and blood sugar levels. The study also suggests that raw honey may even help raise HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).
  • Heals wounds:
  • Raw honey helps draw out moisture from wounds, which prevents bacteria growth and helps wounds heal faster.
  • Immune booster:
  • Raw honey has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, which help fuel the immune system. It is often used in many remedies to treat the flu and to help fight allergies.
  • Skin & hair:
  • Honey is often used as a beauty remedy for skin and hair. It can be used as a facial mask or a hair mask. It unclogs pores in skin and restores shine and luster to hair. Its anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties can help with acne and pimples.
  • Weight loss:
  • Many of us may not think of eating honey for weight loss, but honey may be a useful food to help us lose weight. Since it is a simple sugar, NOT a refined and processed sugar, it contains vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Honey helps boost and speed up the metabolism which helps the body burn fat. Raw honey also helps stabilize our blood sugar level, which result in less food cravings.
  • Honey has a healthier glycemic index (GI) than sugar, therefore it doesn’t cause a sugar rush, but it is gradually absorbed into our body.
  • NOTE:More than three-fourths of the honey sold in U.S. grocery stores isn’t exactly what the bees produce“, according to testing done exclusively for Food Safety News.
  • In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration says that any product that’s been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen isn’t honey.
Ultra filtering is a high-tech procedure where honey is heated,  forced at high pressure through small filters to remove pollen, which is the only foolproof sign identifying the source of the honey. It is a spin-off of a technique refined by the Chinese, who have illegally dumped tons of their honey – some containing illegal antibiotics – on the U.S. market for years.
