Water is life, and it is often taken for granted.

Humans are made up of over 60 percent water. Blood is 92 percent water and the brain and muscles are 75 percent.

Water is lost throughout the day from sweating, breathing, and other bodily functions.

In order for your body to function properly, it is important to replenish these fluids and drink water. “The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day,” states Mayo Clinic. “The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

In a study published by the journal Headache, participants reported an increase in migraines when they were dehydrated.

Water may be great for the heart. A long-term study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that those who drank more than five glasses of water per day had a 41 percent less risk of dying from coronary heart disease than those who drank two glasses or less.

5. May help prevent kidney stones:
Higher water intake may dilute the urine going through the kidneys, which in turn dilutes the minerals in the urine. This way, kidney stones may be less likely to be formed from the minerals in urine.

6. Metabolism booster:
Water has been proven to speed up metabolism and help with weight loss.

In a study published by the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, those who drank about 17 ounces of water had 30 percent increase in metabolism rate. Water works as an appetite suppressant and aids with digestion.

7. Muscle health:
When the cells in the human body don’t have enough fluids from water, muscle fatigue can set in. It is important for the muscles to stay hydrated, especially during physical activity and exercise.

8. Regular bowel movements:
Low water consumption is a risk factor for constipation. Drinking more water can help prevent constipation and make bowel movements more regular.

9. Skin health:
