The benefits of most potent spice in the world keeps coming.  According to a new study, turmeric may help fight drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Turmeric is one of the most potent healing spices in the world. It is one the most researched plants in the world. There are so many reasons to eat turmeric. The medicinal properties of turmeric have been the subject of over 6000 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies.

The new research shows that curcumin, one of the main active compounds in turmeric may help fight drug-resistant tuberculosis. Turmeric has been used for centuries to treat a variety of conditions. It has shown potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The researchers found that when they stimulated human immune cells called macrophages, curcumin was able to get rid of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Mycobacterium is the prime cause of tuberculosis. The process depended on stopping the activity of a molecule called nuclear factor kappa-B.

The immune-regulating properties of turmeric may spur a new treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Our study has provided basic evidence that curcumin protects against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in human cells,” said Dr. Xiyuan Bai, lead author of the Respirology study. “The protective role of curcumin to fight drug-resistant tuberculosis still needs confirmation, but if validated, curcumin may become a novel treatment to modulate the host immune response to overcome drug-resistant tuberculosis.”

The study showing that turmeric may help fight drug-resistant tuberculosis was published in the journal Respirology.
