Turmeric is superior to Prozac and pain-killers for PMS

Turmeric is one of the most potent healing spices in the world. It is one the most researched plants in the world. There are so many reasons to eat turmeric and now a new research mentions turmeric is superior to Prozac and pain-killers for PMS. The medicinal properties of turmeric have been the subject of over 6000 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies.

According to Mayo Clinic:“Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has a wide variety of symptoms, including mood swings, tender breasts, food cravings, fatigue, irritability and depression. It’s estimated that as many as 3 of every 4 menstruating women have experienced some form of premenstrual syndrome.”

New research now shows that turmeric is superior to Prozac and pain-killers for PMS.

Many women take over the counter pain-killers, not knowing that these drugs can cause adverse health effects including heart problems and kidney problems.

As explained in the study abstract:

After having identified persons with PMS, participants were randomly allocated into placebo (n=35) and curcumin (n=35) groups. Each sample in placebo and curcumin groups received two capsules daily for seven days before menstruation and for three days after menstruation for three successive menstrual cycles. Participants noted the severity of the symptoms mentioned in the daily record questionnaire. Self-report was used to determine menstrual cycle phase of participants. At the fourth day of each menstrual cycle venous blood samples were collected for BDNF measurement by ELISA method. Before intervention, BDNF levels and mean scores of PMS symptoms (mood, behavioral and physical symptoms) between two groups showed no significant differences. But in curcumin group first, second and third cycles after interventions BDNF levels were significantly higher and mean scores of PMS symptoms were significantly less than placebo group.”

In other words, compared to the placebo group, the group that took curcumin for PMS symptoms showed significantly less PMS symptoms in the first, second, and third cycles of interventions.

The study showing that turmeric is superior to prozac and pain-killers for PMS was published in the journal Neuropeptides.
