Foods that are toxic to dogs

Foods that are toxic to dogs

  • We know how much our little friends love food.
  • They are especially attracted to the food that they see us eating.
  • Sharing a little bit of your food is okay as long it is in moderation.
  • Educating ourselves is key to keeping our dogs healthy.
  • Alcohol:
  • Dogs are much more sensitive to alcohol than we are. Even a small amount of alcohol can cause intoxication in dogs. It can cause vomiting, loss of coordination, and disorientation. Dogs showing symptoms of intoxication should be monitored closely. Those who are inebriated to the point of not being able to stand up should be monitored by a veterinarian.
  • Bread dough:
  • Raw bread dough with yeast can be detrimental to the health of dogs.
  • The yeast can cause the stomach to expand and can even cut off blood flow. “Affected dogs may have distended abdomens and show signs such as a lack of coordination, disorientation, stupor and vomiting (or attempts to vomit). In extreme cases, coma or seizures may occur and could lead to death from alcohol intoxication, states the ASPCA.
  • Chocolate:
  • Chocolate intoxication can be very harmful to dogs, and is very common around the holidays when there is a lot of chocolate around the house. The rule is that the darker it is, the more toxic it is to dogs. “Signs seen can range from vomiting, increased thirst, abdominal discomfort and restlessness to severe agitation, muscle tremors, irregular heart rhythm, high body temperature, seizures and death,” according to the ASPCA. Dogs showing more than mild restlessness should be taking a vet immediately.
  • Grapes:
  • Grapes have been shown to cause kidney failure in dogs. It is unclear why grapes cause kidney failure. “Dogs experiencing grape or raisin toxicosis usually develop vomiting, lethargy or diarrhea within 12 hours of ingestion, states the ASPCA. Make sure to bring your dog to a vet if it has consumed grapes and is exhibiting any of these symptoms.
  • Onions:
  • All members of the onion family (shallots, onions, scallions, etc.) contain compounds that can damage red blood cells in dogs. “Affected dogs may seem weak or reluctant to move, or they may appear to tire easily after mild exercise. Their urine may be orange-tinged to dark red in color,” the ASPCA explains.
  • Note: If your dog is experiencing any of the symptoms described above, make sure to take your pet to a certified veterinarian as soon as possible.
