FDA is banning underage e-cigarette sales

The FDA is banning underage e-cigarette sales, according to a new statement.

The agency recently announced that they will prohibit sales of e-cigarettes, cigars, and hookah tobacco to anyone under the age of 18.

This ban is to prevent children and youth from using e-cigarette products. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reported last August that e-cigarette usage tripled in just one year amongst middle and high school students. Since then, numbers have continued to rise.

The FDA statement announced the following rules to take effect in 90 days:

• Setting 18 as the age when users can legally buy products, including online purchases
• Requiring a photo ID as proof of age
• Not allowing products to be sold in vending machines (barring those in adult-only facilities)
• Not allowing free samples to be distributed

“We have more to do to help protect Americans from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine, especially our youth. As cigarette smoking among those under 18 has fallen, the use of other nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, has taken a drastic leap. All of this is creating a new generation of Americans who are at risk of addiction,” said HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell. “Today’s announcement is an important step in the fight for a tobacco-free generation – it will help us catch up with changes in the marketplace, put into place rules that protect our kids and give adults information they need to make informed decisions.”

Many health groups support the move, including the American Academy of Pediatrics.

It is only a framework upon which to build meaningful regulation to end the tobacco epidemic in the United States once and for all,” says Benard Dreyer, MD, president of the organization in a statement. “Today’s action marks an historic step forward in helping to alleviate the threat of lifelong nicotine addiction for our youth, and should serve as a foundation for further progress when it comes to keeping children safe from dangerous tobacco products.”
