Eating french fries may double the risk of premature death

Eating french fries may double the risk of premature death, according to recent research from Italy. Let’s learn more about the health risks found in the study.

French fries are a staple in pretty much every American restaurant, especially fast food ones. Back in February of this year, we reported on how just one fast food meal can hurt your metabolism.

Now, new research shows that eating french fries can pose serious health risks. The scientists found that eating two to three servings of fries per week could increase the risk of premature death by two-fold.

The researchers looked at data from over 4,000 adults who were involved in the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) cohort study.

The participants were required to take a food frequency survey. The researchers used this info to measure potato intake levels of the participants.

During the 8-year study follow-up period, 236 of the participants were deceased.

Compared to those who did not consume fried potatoes, those who ate about two to three servings of fried potatoes per week had a doubled risk of death, and eating more than three servings increased the risk even more.

The team concluded: The frequent consumption of fried potatoes appears to be associated with an increased mortality risk. Additional studies in larger sample sizes should be performed to confirm if overall potato consumption is associated with higher mortality risk.”

The study showing that eating french fries may double the risk of premature death was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
