Alcohol and processed meat cause stomach cancer

Alcohol and processed meat cause stomach cancer, according to a major new scientific report released by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund.

Scientists in the study gathered data on stomach cancer, and afterwards, a panel of experts analyzed the data.

There were 952,000 stomach cancer cases in 2012.

Stomach cancer is the 3rd most common cause of death from cancer. It is much more common in men than women. It is more common among seniors, as the average age of diagnosis is 72%.

The researchers found the following strong evidence about how alcohol and processed meat cause stomach cancer:

‣ Consuming approximately three or more alcoholic drinks per day increases the risk of stomach cancer.

‣ Eating foods that were preserved with salt increases the risk of developing stomach cancer.

‣ There is strong evidence that consuming processed meat increases the risk of stomach non-cardia cancer.

‣ Being overweight or obese increases the risk of stomach cardia cancer.

Dr. Anne McTiernan, one of the experts on the research panel said:

“The bottom line is to follow the AICR recommendations for cancer prevention in general. Limit intake of alcohol, which for men means no more than two drinks a day and for women no more than one drink per day. Eat a plant-based diet, lots of vegetables, fruits, and avoid intake of processed meats. Also, keep weight in a normal range.”

The study showing that alcohol and processed meat cause stomach cancer was published by the World Cancer Research Fund.
