Obesity speeds up brain aging

Obesity speeds up brain aging, according to recent research.

Obesity is a complex disorder involving excess body fat. It is not just a cosmetic concern, but it increases the risk of health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), worldwide obesity has more than doubled since the year 1980, and rates continue to rise. WHO estimates that about 600 million people worldwide were obese in the year 2014.

The World Obesity Federation released a new report showing that if the government doesn’t take serious action, obesity rates are to rise dramatically by 2025.

The new study found structural changes in the brains of overweight people. The details were reported in the Borneo Post:

“After scanning brains of 473 people aged between 20 and 87 and dividing them into lean and overweight categories, scientists discovered that extra weight would accelerate the loss of the brain’s white matter …

Scientists then calculated how much that white matter volume related to age across the two groups. They found that an overweight 50-year-old had a comparable white matter volume to a slim 60-year-old person.

‘The overall message is that brains basically appear to be 10 years older if you are overweight or obese,’ said Lisa Ronan, lead author of the study from Cambridge University.”

The study showing that obesity speeds up brain aging was published in the journal Neurobiology Of Aging.
