Mylan will release a more affordable EpiPen after price increase

Mylan will release a more affordable EpiPen after the outrage over the major price increase.

The EpiPen releases epinephrine into the bloodstream with a quick stab to the thigh. This drug reverses the potentially fatal swelling and closing of the airways, which are caused by severe allergy reactions.

The EpiPen was only $103.50 for a set back in 2009, but the price has rose steadily since. This May, the priced spiked to a whopping $608.61.

The new EpiPen will be a generic one, and will cost $300 for a two-pack.

The generic EpiPen will be released in dosages of 0.15 milligrams, as well as 0.30 mg. This cheaper EpiPen will be available within the next few weeks.

We understand the deep frustration and concerns associated with the cost of EpiPen to the patient, and have always shared the public’s desire to ensure that this important product be accessible to anyone who needs it,” Mylan CEO Heather Bresch said in a statement.

Our decision to launch a generic alternative to EpiPen is an extraordinary commercial response,” Bresch said. “We determined that bypassing the brand system in this case and offering an additional alternative was the best option.”
