Music legend David Bowie dies at 69

Sad news was announced today, as music legend David Bowie dies at 69.

A statement was released on his social media accounts this morning:

David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

David Bowie was always a forward thinking artist who believed in the power of images through his words and always found ways to create different personas through his music.

As written in the New York Times:

Mr. Bowie was his generation’s standard-bearer for rock as theater: something constructed and inflated yet sincere in its artifice, saying more than naturalism could. With a voice that dipped down to baritone and leapt into falsetto, he was complexly androgynous, an explorer of human impulses that could not be quantified.”

During his career, he influenced countless artists not to fear innovation and inspired them to be themselves. Many artists expressed their condolences this morning, including Beatles legend Paul McCartney:

Very sad news to wake up to on this raining morning. David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together. His music played a very strong part in British musical history and I’m proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world,” McCartney said. I send my deepest sympathies to his family and will always remember the great laughs we had through the years. His star will shine in the sky forever.”

Bowie’s last album entitled “Blackstar” was released just last Friday. According to close friend and producer Tony Visconti, the album was intended as a parting gift to the world.

Music is such an essential aspect of health. It is one of the very few activities that is known to stimulate and activate the entire brain. David Bowie knew how to tap into this better than anyone. His music will continue to heal and change lives. May he rest in peace.

His beautiful song “Heroes” reminds us that we can all be heroes:
