Water is life, and it is often taken for granted.

Humans are made up of over 60 percent water. Blood is 92 percent water and the brain and muscles are 75 percent.

Water is lost throughout the day from sweating, breathing, and other bodily functions.

In order for your body to function properly, it is important to replenish these fluids and drink water. “The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day,” states Mayo Clinic. “The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

Please make sure to drink filtered water and avoid bottled water, as bottled water has been linked to BPA exposure and recently E. Coli contamination.

So, is the water in your home safe to drink? Let’s find out.

Water can be easily contaminated at any point. While the United States has some of the cleanest drinking water in the world, there is still a chance that some of the water we drink may be tainted.

Here are some examples of contaminants:

◦ Bacteria, viruses and parasites
◦ Drugs and medications
◦ Pesticides
◦ Industrial waste
◦ Sewage waste
◦ Radioactive materials

What to do to make sure your water is safe

◦ If your water has an unusual smell or looks different than normal, make sure to switch to another source and call your water company.
◦ Keep an eye on the reports that your water company sends out to be aware of contaminants. Call your water company if you are not getting the reports.
◦ Be willing to complain to your water company if necessary. If water quality does not improve, get organized with other residents and contact your government officials to make changes.
◦ Use the EPA drinking water tools, which contain a list of water quality violations, reported water problems, and actions taken by the state to improve water quality.
