How to detox your home: An interview with Van Vlahakis, CEO of Earth Friendly Products

  • Hard to believe isn’t it? But the most pollution is inside our home, and NOT outside.
  • If we look under your kitchen’s cabinets and check the chemicals on the labels of our home cleaning products we will be surprised.
  • Our golden rule is: If you can’t pronounce the words on the labels, then they are bad for you.
  • So how can we detox our home?
  • With this in mind, we decided to sit with Van Vlahakis, CEO of Earth Friendly Products (EFP), one of the US leader of green and organic household and commercial cleaners.
  • Q: How can we eliminate chemicals from our home?
  • A: Try to follow these steps:
  • “Properly discarding chemicals is crucial. Trash companies advise residents to call their local site and arrange to have their chemicals picked up separately by HAZMAT or dropped off by residents at a nearby facility”.
  • Q: What should we get rid of?
  • A: Take a box and put all window cleaners, floor cleaners, auto dishwashing detergents, bug killers and drain openers. Most conventional home cleaners contain toxic chemicals that will trigger asthma, skin allergies and may lead to illness.
  • Do not pour down the drain it would pollute the environment, and have a severe impact on our precious water supply.”
  • Q: What is the 2nd step?
  • A: Restock your cleaning cabinets with products that are plant-derived. They must say on the labels that they are 100% Natural, Dioxan-free, Formaldehyde-free, Petrochemical-free.
  • Q: What products from Earth Friendly Products should we all have?
  • A: Our ECOS laundry detergent. It has a built in coconut fabric softener, it is very gentle and will protect your textiles. It is the #1 selling green laundry detergent in the world.
  • The 2nd product you should all have is Dishmate fruit flavored liquid dishwashing soaps. It is the best mate for your dishes. Conventional dishwashing liquids can leave toxic residues on your dishes
  • Q: How can we have a home that is eco-compliant?
  • A: To do so, it is important to use 100% natural products that are fully biodegradable THROUGH OUT YOUR HOME.
  • In addition to the laundry and dish detergents, invest in plant derived window, furniture and floor cleaners.
  • Get some white vinegar and use to disinfect your toilets and sinks.
  • You can also use lemon juice to whiten your laundry. These are simple and inexpensive ways to clean your home.
  • We carry many products as well such Parsley Plus for hard surfaces and our Creamy Cleanser to whiten and add sparkle to any sink or bathtub.
  • Q: Do you have a hand soap that is natural?
  • A: Yes, we make one in lavender and lemongrass and it is 100% pure .
  • “Beware of Anti-bacterial soaps. Purchase one which does not contain Triclosan, as it is a toxic ingredient.”
  • You can find all the Earth Friendly Products at Pay N Save Grocery, Rainbow,  Whole Foods, Walmart and on line of course.
  • Each Earth Friendly Products is formulated under the strictest environmental standards that surpass the industry’s current accepted green credentials.
