Cough Reliever

Cough is our body’s reaction to irritants in our throat and air passages. When there is an irritant in these areas, our nerves send a message to our brain.

The brain then sends a message to the abdomen and chest to expel a strong burst of air to get rid of the irritant.

Mayo Clinic explains, “An occasional cough is normal and healthy. A cough that persists for several weeks or one that brings up discolored or bloody mucus may indicate an underlying condition that requires medical attention.”

Please consult your health practitioner or qualified expert if your cough is prolonged or serious.

There are many natural foods that can help relieve common coughs, such as garlic, lemon juice, raw honey, cayenne pepper, and turmeric.

Combining these ingredients together creates a super-potent cough-reliever.

Cayenne pepper:

  • The powerful spice has anti-inflammatory properties and has the ability to relieve cough by clearing congestion in the sinuses.

Garlic:

  • It is nature’s antibiotic and is widely used to treat and prevent colds and flu that often come with cough symptoms. A study done in the UK suggests that the participants who took garlic supplements were “less likely to get a cold and recovered faster if infected.”

Lemon juice:

  • Vitamin C is very well known as an immune boosting antioxidant, and lemons provide plenty of it. Antioxidants protect the body from the effects of oxidative stress, which may help strengthen the immune system and ward off diseases. Dr. Andrew Weil explains, “oxidative stress is the total burden placed on organisms by the constant production of free radicals in the normal course of metabolism plus whatever other pressures the environment brings to bear (natural and artificial radiation, toxins in air, food and water; and miscellaneous sources of oxidizing activity, such as tobacco smoke).” The effects of oxidative stress are often linked to chronic illnesses such as heart disease and many types of cancers.

Raw honey:

  • A 2007 study showed that honey may help relieve coughs and trouble sleeping.  A single dose of buckwheat honey was just as effective as a single dose of dextromethorphan in relieving nocturnal cough.

Turmeric:

  • The superstar spice It has anti-inflammatory properties, which help relieve congestion, and it has antiviral and antibacterial properties, which aid in clearing infections and viruses that may be causing cough.

Mix:

  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 3 tbsp. of lemon juice
  • 4 tbsp. of raw honey
  • 1/4 tsp. of cayenne
  • 1/4 tsp. of turmeric

Take when cough symptoms occur up to 4 to 5  times a day.
