Bacon and other processed meats can cause cancer

Processed foods are getting more attention nowadays. An analysis from The University of North Carolina on grocery purchases shows that highly processed foods dominate the U.S. grocery market, as they make up 60 percent of the calories that Americans buy.

These highly processed foods usually have more sugar, fat, and sodium than foods that are less processed.

Past research from Bio Med Central has shown that processed meats are linked to an early death risk. Now, new research from the World Health Organization (WHO) adds to the health risks, showing that bacon and other processed meats can cause cancer.

According to reports, WHO is getting ready to declare that bacon, sausage, and other processed meats do cause cancer. They are also expected to announce that red meat is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Processed meat is expected to be put in the same category as harmful substances like cigarettes, asbestos, and alcohol.

Previous research from University of California, San Diego (UCSD) showed that a sugar in red meat called Neu5Gc actually feeds tumors.

A large scale Nurses Health Study showed that red meat may increase risk of breast cancer as well.
