Moth repellents

Moth repellents

  • It is important to use natural bug repellents and not conventional mothballs, to avoid harmful and toxic chemicals.
  •
  • Conventional mothballs are made of 1,4-dichlorobenzene, deodorant and may also contain camphor. They can trigger respiratory problems and serious health issues.
  • If you have used them, their smell is hard to get rid off. Before you switch to a natural repellent, it is important to wash all your clothes, air out your closet and wash the floors with 1 part white distilled vinegar an 4 parts water.
  •
  • Moths are bothered by the smell of cedar, clove, lavender, mint and rosemary.
  • Here are some natural and toxic-free tips to keep them away from your closets:
  • Moth repellents:
  • 1. Cedar:
  • Cedar wood is  one of the best moth repellent and it works! Ideally it would be a good idea to have cedar-lined closets. Otherwise, put some cedar balls or chips in a bowl and place them where needed.
  • Note: Cedar loses its scent over time. Revive it by adding a few drops of essential cedar oil once a month.
  • Cloves and rosemary:
  • Mix both and put in a bowl or sachet and place in corners of closets.
  • Replace once a month.
  • Lavender:
  • Fill gauze pouches with dried lavender, or dip cotton balls in lavender essential oil. Place in closets and drawers.
  • Mint:
  • Place several mint leaves in a sachet and put in closet or drawers.
  • General tips:
  • Store clothing in sealed containers. Make sure your clothes are thoroughly dry before storing. Moths love wool, be sure to store away all things made of wool.
  • We recommend Mountain Rose Herbs as a reputable source for essential oils and the bay leaves.
