Humming bird nectar

Humming bird nectar

  • Summer is here and it is getting hot. Our little humming birds need more nectar.
  • Making them a natural nectar is the way to go. Please avoid the commercial red nectar that is sold everywhere. It is said that the red dye may be harmful to them. It is better to be safe than sorry.
  • Instructions:
  • Boil 4 cups of water
  • Add 1 cup of organic fine cane sugar
  • Let simmer for 2 minutes until it thickens a little
  • Add 1 tbsp of orange blossom water
  • Cool 30 minutes
  • If you cannot find orange blossom water. The nectar will still attract them. The key is to let it simmer for 2 to 3 minutes so it thickens a little.
  • You can make enough for 2 days and keep in a cool place.
  • Note: The orange blossom water tastes sweet like flower nectar, is all natural and flavorful. Make sure you get the natural kind.
  • Wash the feeder before you fill it. Use warm water and 1 tbsp of white distilled vinegar.
  • Refill the feeder every 3 days or every 2 days during hot days.
  • Bees should not be anywhere near the feeders so check them regularly.
